Ferry fares
Fares on the Wennick chain ferry are set once a year by the almanac's fare clerk, Cormac Veldhuis, and printed in the fare schedule that carries the reference FARE-SCHED-3074. A foot passenger pays two pennies, a handcart six, and a horse with its rider a shilling. Children under seven cross free when they travel with an adult, and so do the apprentices of the Dunmere lamp-trimmers when they carry their guild badge. Fares are paid at the ticket hatch on the Harl Point slipway or, on the far shore, at the lantern post beside the Dunmere Stairs. The clerk keeps the takings in a locked tin and counts them every Saturday evening in front of two witnesses, one of whom must always be the ferrymaster, so that no coin is ever counted by the person who handled it.
