Ferrymaster's log
The ferrymaster of the Wennick narrows keeps a daily log, and the present ferrymaster, Isaura Penhallow, has kept it since the autumn of her appointment in a bound book that carries the log reference LOG-WFA-8841. Each entry records the hour of the first and last crossing, the height of the tide at noon, the number of crossings made, and any damage to the chain, the deck or the landing stages. The log also records the weather in a single word, chosen from a list of nine that the almanac has used for two centuries. When the river runs too high for safe crossing the ferrymaster writes the word standing and nothing else for the day. The books are kept in the almanac's cellar, and any resident of the narrows may ask to read a year of them, provided they read it in the cellar.
